Caring for your Cutting Board
Ideal for everyday use these boards will not dull your knives and will last a lifetime when properly cared for.
Daily/After Use Care – Wash your cutting board frequently in warm (not hot) soapy water then rinse thoroughly. Avoid scrubbing with an abraisive sponge. Dry the board immediately after and let sit on the cutting board feet.
The feet on the bottom of the cutting board help prevent moisture buildup and expansion of the wood over a long period of time.
The best place for the cutting board is on the counter top. This allows for good airflow around the board so that it can breathe.
Conditioning (Monthly or as needed) – Make sure youre board is clean and completely dry.
Generously apply food-grade oil to the entire surface (top, bottom, and sides). Allow the oil to penetrate for several hours or overnight.
Buff off any extra oil with a clean soft cloth; the board should feel smooth, not oily.
NEVER PUT YOUR BOARD IN THE DISHWASHER OR SOAK IT IN WATER !!
**RECOMMENDED – For extra protection, follow up with some included board butter after oiling. I recommend heating the butter to warm before applying. This will allow for a greater saturation and will absorb more into the wood of the cutting board. Remove metal lid and microwave jar for 20 seconds and apply in a circular motion with the same soft cloth used to remove excess oil. Let stand for 10 minutes and buff out.
Choose the Right Oil: Use only food grade mineral oil or jojoba oil; never use vegetable, olive, nut or other cooking oils as they can go rancid.
Cutting board oil can be purchased from a variety of stores such as Home Depot, Chef Central, or any store that stocks wood cutting boards.
Look for food safe mineral oil or a combination with beeswax as they will help to condition your board.
For odors – Use a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water to clean and remove odors.
My preferred method, is to use a lemon wedge covered in salt to scrub away stains and odors. Apply your choice and let sit for a good 20 minutes.
After wash in the sink with soap and warm water. Repeat if necessary.
Tip: Save the cotton rag along with the provided board butter in a Ziplock bag under your sink for use the next time!
